Below is an outline of the common mistakes and rules with BJJ - Please read careful
Certain moves are legal or illegal in training and in competition and it is really import that you become aware of these because there will be a level of expectation from you especially on the mat and in training. Below are some of the common submissions and movements that are banned or frowned upon.
- rotational leg locks such and heal hock and toe holds ( these movements can do some pretty nasty knee injuries - if you are intentionally open to training these with your training partner. We ask if you can get consent from your training partner before doing practicing or playing a game of catch and release.
- Straight leg locks can be broken down into 2 main movements - knee bars are straight foot locks. These movements are also dangerous and can cause injuries to the ankle, Achilles tendon and knee joints, with this in mind we ask if you can take extreme care when demonstrating these movements in class
- Reaping the knee is a movement that occurs when in single leg X guard and you are holding onto your opponents ankle and you take your foot across you mid line which forces there knee to rotate internally - collapsing movement of the knee can cause serous injury. This movement remains banned in most gym and competitions and we would like it if you took serious care around this area
- Neck cracks are banned in our facility, any position that is intentionally trying to hurt your opponents neck- If this is to happen when training, we would like you to let the instructors know so we can make the person aware that this movement is prohibited
- Slamming your opponent or at any movement were you pick your opponent up of the ground and dive your weight with velocity
- Jumping takedowns or anywhere you dive your weight onto your opponent - this could lead to your opponent miss stepping being caught off guard causing a severe injury. this is not recommended in our gym facility
- Single finger grabbing or two finger grip breaking is Frowned upon - if you want to break your opponents grips, you can grab inside the palm or across the knuckles.
- Spiking your opponent or driving your opponents head into the mat when countering a single leg take down is prohibited
- Trickier chokes or when you put a lot of force into the front of your opponent's neck and cut off there air supply is prohibited
- Trying to make your opponent tap due to pain instead of using leverage is technique is frowned upon - this may include putting your forearm into there neck to force your opponent to realise a technique
- Please no eye gouging or face grabbing in our facility and is frowned upon
